ANTIQUE 1895 BROADWAY STAGE STAR VIRGINIA HARNED HANDWRITTEN AUTOGRAPHED TESTIMONIAL LETTER with ORIGINAL PHOTO POSTCARD ORIGINAL FRAME, MATTED
SIZE OF ITEM: 17 1/8” x 14 1/8”
The cold cream testimonial letter reads:
" Garden Theatre
April 18th, 1895
Joseph L.
Parker
Dear Sir -
I have used your cold cream for years and find it delightful.
Would use no other.
Very Sincirly (sp) Yours
Virginia Harned "
This letter and photo postcard from "Trilby" star Virginia Harned was likely a cherished possession of the owner of that cold cream company and probably hung over his desk for decades.
About the actress: Virginia Harned was born on May 29, 1868 and died on April 29, 1946.
She was a noted American stage actress at the turn of the 20th century.
She is mainly remembered for playing the title character in the 1895 Broadway premiere of the play Trilby which was based on George Du Maurier’s novel also titled Trilby.
The play premiered in New York at the Garden Theatre in April of 1895.
About the Postcard: original photographic postcard by E.
Chickering, dated 1895 featuring Ms.
Harned in her most famous role as Trilby.
Condition: I am assuming the frame and its glass date from 1895 as well.
The frame has the ‘patina of age’ and the paint is chipped.
The glass has some scratches.
The frame appears to have been opened, the ‘original’ paper backing is gone and there is cardboard for backing; have not investigated further.
(Reflections noted in the glass are not defects.
