Educational Interpreter Position Description:
This position performs sign-language interpreting for deaf students and voice for the student when/if needed to facilitate communication and education of the deaf and hard of hearing students in the District.
This position performs non-instructional signing activities, converting voice to sign language and/or vice versa.
This position provides specially designed instruction to student(s) as supervised by the Special Education teacher.
Minimum Qualifications:
1.
Copy of high school diploma or equivalent – documentation required at time of application.
Completion of two year Interpreter Training Program, including courses in Education Code of Ethics.
Must have passed an Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) prior to being hired.
2.
Official transcript with evidence of AA degree or higher or 48 semester or 72 quarter college-level credit hours or copy of ParaPro Assessment with score of 461 or higher – documentation required at time of application.
3.
Demonstrated ability to: o perform accurate, timely, impartial and effective signing, including receptive skills to understand a deaf and hard of hearing student who signs rapidly o work independently o obtain, clarify and exchange information o ability of lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds o interact with deaf and hard of hearing children in a warm and confident manner o remain flexible to adapt to changes in environment and/or schedules o establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people
4.
Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of signing and interpreting for the deaf and hard of hearing.
5.
Knowledge of educational interpreting and related vocabulary is desired.
6.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people in a multicultural and diverse socio-economic setting.
7.
All Paraeducators will have to complete the State required trainings within the Paraeducator Board designated timelines.
Central Kitsap School District will provide the guidelines and determine the trainings required for the Fundamental Course of Study Certificate.
This qualification begins after officially hired.
Performance Responsibilities:
1.
Serve as an active, productive and collegial team member, who values, builds and maintains supportive relationships with student, staff, parents and community members.
2.
Interpret/transliterate all classroom communication and dynamics, including what the teacher, other students and the deaf and hard of hearing student may say, other noises that occur in or outside the classroom.
3.
Perform sign to voice interpretation; refer all questions from the deaf and hard of hearing student back to the teacher and vice versa.
4.
Familiarize self with subject matter being taught, studying materials, handouts, previewing films and ensuring ability to utilize appropriate signing of vocabulary and expressions applicable to the subject.
5.
Adapt signing to varying student needs and abilities and to personality of the speaker to objectively express the tone and mood of the speaker as well as the content of the material; resigns using different signs as necessary to facilitate students of differing levels in the same direction.
6.
Facilitate student's reading of signs; maintain a dress code as established by the District; may recommend alternative seat arrangements for deaf and hard of hearing student to the teacher to enhance visibility of teacher/speaker, visual aids, etc.
7.
Provide interpretation/transliteration for various other situations, such as assemblies, field trips, meetings, test administration, phone calls, music, extra-curricular activities and sports events.
8.
Provide professional support and assistance to other interpreters in the program, monitoring classes periodically demonstrating signing vocabulary and providing back-up interpretation for classes available.
9.
Serve as a resource person for the District staff providing information regarding the interpretation process and needs and concerns of deaf and hard of hearing people.
10.
Follow the code of ethics for interpreters as established by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
11.
Provide specially designed instruction to students as designed and supervised by the special education teacher.
12.
Uphold and assist in enforcing school rules, administrative regulations and board policy.
13.
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
14.
Requires the use of multiple communication and technology systems, which may include electronic mail, computers, document cameras, smart boards and web-based resources.
15.
Perform similar, related duties as assigned.
